7 Ways To Be A Happy And Productive Remote Worker

by | Blog Posts | 0 comments

COVID-19 has created a work-from-home revolution. Each day, more people are reporting to their home office than to their actual office and while the expectations remain the same, the environment doesn’t.

The key to work-from-home success is to create an environment that allows you to be productive. Whether you are working from home for the first time during this period or just need a quick refresher, here are some useful tips to create a functional and productive work-home environment.

1. Create A Dedicated Office Space

To create boundaries for both your personal and work life, a remote worker needs a war room. Designate an area of the house to be your dedicated office space. Where possible, choose a room with a door that can close. Mental focus plays a role in your ability to execute tasks effectively when you’re at home. Working in the lounge, in front of the TV, is not conducive to a productive workday, separate yourself from distractions and create a space to fuel your creativity.

2. Use The Tools To Do Your Job

Ensure you have the necessary access and tools to continue with work-as-usual. The world has drastically shifted to digital and in this new playground, each homeworker should be equipped with their digital toolbox. Internet connection is vital to stay connected and in a cloud-based environment, this is your key to access. While companies are finding their feet in this regard, some companies have implemented a data-free option within their platform for users who are unable to access the internet.

While your toolsets may be different, it is important to define which platforms you will be using. Alternatively, streamlining these platforms into a single solution will not only enhance communication, but it will also create ease-of-us and management for companies to understand resources and work processes.

3. Communicate. Communicate. Communicate

Communication has always been key but in a remote working environment, it is vital to create a communication standard and uphold it. Creating group chats, or daily check-in meetings with teams will ensure that tasks are completed on time, and that team members are clear about the upcoming deadlines and tasks. Establishing a streamlined communication platform will empower workers to navigate their work and will clearly define the manner in which they work.

4. Schedule More Than You Ever Did Before

We all have diaries where we plan meetings and understand our appointments for the day. With remote workers, you should plan your day even more rigorously than you did before. Map out your day the night before (better would be at the beginning of the week) and schedule out your tasks for the day. Creating a strict schedule will keep you on track and minimize your ability to get distracted at home.

5. Dedicated Social Media Time

Since you’re at home and free to be on our phone without judgement from your peers, you’ll naturally be on your phone more than you normally are. You’ll want to avoid situations where you look up from your phone and realize you’ve been on Instagram for 30 minutes and need to play catch up with work. Dedicate time, whether it’s over lunchtime, your morning or evenings where you can freely scroll through social media and see what everyone is up to. Keeping your social platforms open in a tab on your desktop, is a recipe for disaster and distraction.

6. Get Physical

You’re going to be moving a lot less than you might be used to, which requires you to be more mindful of how much physical exercise you get in. While you may be quarantined during the COVID-19 pandemic, there are still ways to move your body during this period. Get up once an hour to stretch, walk around the house or simply get up and get water.

Block out a minimum of 30 minutes a day to exercise. Find a home workout online and prioritize this as it will not only help your overall health and wellness, it will also enhance your mental focus to ensure productivity.

7. Boundaries

Previously, when you log off at the end of the day, most of us could be guilty of taking our work home with us, but in this new world, our work is already in our home. While working earlier and later could be part of the project you’re working on, or needed to complete tasks, it is important that when you log off or finish your work for the day, that you turn off.

Do not bring your laptop/work into a different part of the house when you are winding down. It is important to create a few boundaries between yourself and your office space. Make sure you are strict with these boundaries, even if it means packing up and putting away your work each night, or simply closing the office door once you leave.
