From Surviving to Thriving with Cindy Van Wyk: Project 10, the Impact of Early Cancer Detection, and Building Community Support in South Africa

by | Blog Posts | 0 comments

Breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent cancers affecting women worldwide, and South Africa is no exception. According to the National Cancer Registry, breast cancer is the most common cancer among South African women, with one in 26 women being diagnosed during their lifetime. Early detection plays a crucial role in improving survival rates, as it allows for timely and more effective treatment options.

Statistics show that when breast cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate can exceed 90%. However, in South Africa, many women face significant barriers to early detection, including limited access to healthcare facilities, lack of awareness, and socio-economic challenges. These obstacles underscore the urgent need for comprehensive breast cancer education and accessible screening services.

Cindy van Wyk, the Chief Operating Officer at Smartz Solutions, has experienced firsthand the life-saving impact of early detection. Her journey through breast cancer and her relentless advocacy for awareness and preventive measures have inspired many. Cindy’s story highlights the critical importance of being informed, proactive, and supported in the fight against breast cancer.

Through her work with Project 10, she aims to address the gaps in breast cancer education and screening in South Africa. By sharing her experience and championing early detection, Cindy hopes to empower more people to take charge of their health and improve their chances of survival. We spoke with Cindy to share her inspiring journey, her battle with breast cancer, and the transformative impact of Project 10 on cancer education and support in South Africa.

The Beginnings: A Passion for Helping Others

Cindy’s dedication to helping others began long before her diagnosis. In 2009, working for a software development company, Cindy embarked on a remarkable journey of community service. Her passion for making a difference was evident when she participated in a grueling fundraiser, cycling from Windhoek to Cape Town through the desert.

This challenging endeavor was undertaken to support their first mobile mammography unit in South Africa. Her involvement in such initiatives highlighted her belief in the power of early detection and preventive care. Cindy’s dedication to these causes set the stage for her later work with Project 10 and the PinkDrive.

The Diagnosis: A Life-Altering Moment

In 2014, Cindy’s life took an unexpected and dramatic turn. While in the United States for a few months, she discovered a lump in her breast. Initially dismissing it as a cyst due to her predisposition, Cindy postponed further examination until her return to South Africa. On August 27, 2014, during a routine bath, she noticed an angry, protruding lump. Recognizing the urgency, Cindy scheduled a mammography appointment for the same day, followed by immediate biopsies.

The results were devastating: early-stage two breast cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes. This diagnosis marked the beginning of a challenging journey filled with uncertainty and fear. Cindy’s swift action and determination to seek medical attention underscored the importance of early detection. Her experience highlights the critical need for awareness and prompt medical intervention in the fight against breast cancer.

The Battle Begins: Surgery and Treatment

Cindy’s response to her diagnosis was both swift and resolute. On September 4, she underwent a bilateral mastectomy, a significant and life-changing surgery. This was followed by consultations with an oncologist on September 18. Despite the aggressive nature of her cancer, it was not hormonal and responded well to treatment. The months that followed were marked by rigorous chemotherapy and radiation sessions, which represented only half the battle.

Cindy’s journey through cancer treatment was a testament to her mental strength and determination. She understood that chemotherapy and radiation were just part of the process; maintaining a positive mindset and will to live were equally crucial. Cindy’s resilience and ability to stay focused on her recovery played a significant role in her successful treatment, demonstrating the power of mental and emotional strength in overcoming adversity.

Finding Purpose in Adversity: The Birth of Project 10

During her treatment, Cindy channeled her energy into staying mentally and physically active, becoming deeply involved in various projects. This period of reflection and involvement led to the birth of what eventually would become Project 10. Cindy’s privilege and knowledge allowed her early detection, and she aimed to extend this advantage to others through her work with the PinkDrive. Her involvement with PinkDrive, an organization focused on preventive healthcare, became a cornerstone of her mission.

For over a decade, Cindy has been a staunch supporter of PinkDrive, participating in numerous fundraisers and educational campaigns. One notable initiative was the bra campaign, which provided woolen prostheses for women who could not afford reconstructive surgery. This campaign was instrumental in helping women regain their sense of femininity and self-confidence. Cindy’s dedication to these causes exemplifies her commitment to improving the lives of breast cancer survivors and advocating for preventive measures.

Project 10: A Decade of Survival and Thriving

Project 10 emerged as a celebration of Cindy’s ten-year survival anniversary. It symbolizes her belief in moving from merely surviving to thriving. Project 10 aims to instill hope and resilience in people battling breast cancer, demonstrating that life after cancer can be full and fulfilling. The project seeks to help survivors, and newly diagnosed cancer warriors shift the mindset from “I am a survivor” to “I am a thriver,” encouraging people to embrace life beyond their diagnosis.

Cindy’s message through Project 10 is clear: resilience intelligence is vital. The journey through cancer involves dealing with personal reactions, the responses of loved ones, and the overwhelming sense of community necessary for support. Project 10 emphasizes creating a supportive tribe, a network of people who uplift and carry each other through the toughest times. This sense of community is crucial for emotional and mental well-being, helping survivors navigate the complexities of their journey.

Servant Leadership: Cindy’s New Perspective

Cancer profoundly changed Cindy’s outlook on life and leadership. It humbled her and shifted her focus from personal success to serving others. Embracing the principles of servant leadership, Cindy now leads by serving her team, her company, and her community. This transformation is a cornerstone of her post-cancer life, reflecting her commitment to making a difference beyond her personal journey.

Cindy’s experience with cancer instilled in her a deep sense of humility, profound gratitude for the gift of life and a desire to serve. She realised that true leadership lies in supporting and uplifting others, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. Her journey from a cancer patient to a community leader exemplifies the transformative power of servant leadership, highlighting the importance of empathy, compassion, and selflessness in today’s world.

The Impact of Project 10: Building a Community of Support

Project 10 is about more than just surviving cancer; it’s about thriving and building a community of support. As part of her dedicated effort to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer, Cindy has launched the ambitious Project 10 campaign. This campaign is characterised by three major fundraising events, each designed to highlight the importance of early detection and preventive care.

These initiatives not only aim to generate financial support for critical breast cancer services but also to inspire and engage communities across South Africa. Through these diverse and challenging events, Cindy showcases her unwavering commitment to the cause, embodying the spirit of resilience and hope that defines Project 10.

Fundraising Efforts:

Tour de Truck

One of the cornerstone events of Cindy’s Project 10 campaign is the Tour de Truck, a unique and ambitious fundraising initiative designed to support the purchase of a new mobile mammography unit. This event involves a 4,000-kilometer round trip on a bicycle, tracing a route from Johannesburg to Springbok or Upington, and then back again. During this journey, Cindy and her team stop in various small towns along the way, engaging with local communities, raising awareness about breast cancer, and offering support to women who may not have access to regular screening. This endeavour is not just about the physical challenge of cycling vast distances but about building connections, sharing stories, and emphasising the importance of early detection and preventive care.

The Munga: An Extreme Mountain Bike Race

Another significant fundraising event in the Project 10 campaign is Cindy’s participation in The Munga, a grueling 1,100-kilometer single-stage mountain bike race that stretches from Bloemfontein to Wellington. Scheduled to start on November 27 and finish before noon on December 2, this race demands not only immense physical endurance but also mental resilience. The Munga is one of the toughest mountain bike races in the world, pushing participants to their limits as they navigate challenging terrain and extreme conditions. Cindy’s involvement in this race serves as a powerful metaphor for the cancer journey—highlighting the determination, strength, and perseverance required to overcome obstacles. Through this race, Cindy aims to raise substantial funds and draw attention to the critical need for mobile screening units and other breast cancer support services.

Robben Island to Blouberg Swim: A Symbolic Challenge

To conclude the Project 10 campaign, Cindy has planned a symbolic and challenging swim from Robben Island to Blouberg. This swim, taking place on December 21 weather permitting, represents the culmination of her fundraising efforts and serves as a poignant reminder of the lengths to which she is willing to go to support breast cancer awareness and education. The swim is not only a physical test but also a tribute to the resilience and strength of breast cancer survivors. By braving the cold and unpredictable waters between Robben Island and Blouberg, Cindy aims to inspire others to contribute to the cause and highlight the importance of early detection and preventive care. This event encapsulates the spirit of Project 10—showing that with determination and community support, survivors can thrive and make a significant impact on the lives of others.
